Gonzaga University

Spokane, WA

On January 20, 2025, Gonzaga held its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day teach-in. Student participation is optional but encouraged by the university despite the event falling  on a federal holiday. However, the teach-in is not optional for the faculty members assigned to it. (See image below).

In an email sent to students in December 2024, Vice Provost for Student Affairs Kent Porterfield and University President Thayne McCullough expressed Gonzaga’s commitment to protect undocumented students in light of the 2024 general election outcome. They used a series of tenets from the Association of Jesuit Colleges to justify their beliefs about undocumented students and immigration (See screenshots of email below):

Several resources are listed for “those seeking immigration legal representation or other assistance…”:

Gonzaga offers emergency funding for both documented and undocumented students. Undocumented students can file for WAFSA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid) along with the Plus Scholar Fund: Washington Dream Coalition.
