Snehal Shingavi
University of Texas - Austin
Snehal Shingavi is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Texas, Austin.
While teaching at the University of California, Berkeley, Shingavi co-founded the anti-Israel group Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) with Professor Hatem Bazian. SJP is known for its vitriolic campaigns and aggressively confronting Jewish and pro-Israel students on campus. They are also known for their active role in Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns on university campuses.
Snehal first generated controversy at UC Berkeley in 2002 for his course, “The Politics and Poetics of Palestinian Resistance.” The course description alleged that Israel has “systematically displaced, killed and maimed millions of Palestinian people.”
The course also all, but outright barred conservative students from attending: “This class takes as its starting point the right of Palestinians to fight for their own self-determination. Conservative thinkers are encouraged to seek other sections.”
Now teaching at UT Austin, Shehal is a regular at protests and events committed to demonizing Israel. During a 2014 lecture, he likened Israel to Nazi Germany, claiming, “This is not me being hyperbolic…..Gaza is the biggest open air concentration camp in the world today and the condition of life in Gaza is not dissimilar to life in Auschwitz and Dachau.”
