Dr. Diana Bowen
Northwestern University
Dr. Diana Bowen is an Assistant Professor of Pediatric, Adolescent, Transitional and Adult Urology at Northwestern. She is also a founding member and surgeon in Northwestern Medicine’s Gender Pathways Program.
The Gender Pathways Program is a multidisciplinary program “committed to providing gender-affirming care to transgender and nonbinary patients.” A 2020 Northwestern Now article says the program “offers feminizing and masculinizing facial, top and bottom surgeries, as well as connections for hormone therapy, primary care, preventative health screenings and laser hair removal.”
In a video for Northwestern Medicine, Dr. Bowen says her role is to “provide urologic support for the transgender surgeries.” She states that the surgeries she performs include “transfeminine surgeries such as gender-affirming vaginoplasty and vulvoplasty as well as gender-affirming phalloplasty and prosthetic implant device.”
In 2022, Bowen participated in a discussion on how to invite “transgender” patients into medical communities. In a three-minute recap, Bowen declared:
“My talk was really focused on tips and tricks for welcoming any gender-diverse patient into your practice, [and] how to make them have a great healthcare experience—both in the general clinic sense and also for any urologic complaint they come in with—and really outside of the bottom surgery aspect that we talk about so frequently.”
“Bottom surgery” refers to a biological male having his penis reconstructed into a “vagina.”
