Avery Tompkins is a professor of Sociology, Anthropology, Women’s Studies, Gender, and Sexuality at Transylvania University in Kentucky. Tompkins recently attacked Nicholas Sandmann, who received international attention for his successful defamation suit against CNN, in an online post.
The interaction began when ACLU employee Samuel Crankshaw criticized Transylvania University for admitting Sandmann, referring to his admission as a “slap in the face.”
Crankshaw described Sandmann as a “troll” and similar to “Milo Yiannopoulos, but he is far more dangerous.” Tompkins then commented that he would monitor Sandmann’s “atrocious” behavior, seeming to threaten that he would report any actions that he deemed “being disruptive, trolling, or engaging in unethical behavior of any kind.” He concluded by stating that Sandmann’s values are antithetical to those of the university. Tompkins has since apologized for his comments.
