Soroosh Shahriari
McGill University
Soroosh Shahriari is a Lecturer of Jewish Studies at McGill University.
In October 2022, Shahriari tweeted his support of the Iranian government’s brutal treatment of protestors. He rejoices that people will be killed, and calls their death, “sweet.”
His comment references the protests that erupted after the Iranian morality police killed 22-year-old Mahsa Amini for allegedly breaking the regime’s dress code. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, at least 224 people have been killed during the government crackdown.
His tweet has been deleted alongside his other social media pages and university page. McGill University has not commented on whether Shahriari is still employed.
The University released the following statement, “As we have reminded our community, it is crucial for all of us to remember the importance of procedural fairness and to take into account the wide protection offered to free expression in our society, even when such expression is distasteful or disturbing.”
