J. Garrett Walker
University of San Francisco
Dr. J. Garrett Walker is an Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of San Francisco. According to her university profile, Walker’s research is focused “on mental health and multiple identity development for two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (2SLGBTQ+) emerging adults with a focus on Black and other racialized communities.”
According to Campus Reform, Walker created a “Check Your Privilege” campaign in order for white students to recognize structural inequalities around them. Walker used a campus-wide campaign with fliers suggesting that anyone who is white, heterosexual, able-bodied, Christian, or male is privileged.
Concerning the “Check Your Privilege” campaign, Walker stated the following as her goals:
“We just hope that people use this as an opportunity to think critically about the world around them and challenge themselves to really consider the implications of structural inequalities and how they, as an individual, can help mitigate the negative effects of social inequalities.”
The University of San Francisco’s webpage for the campaign states that it “was implemented to raise student, faculty, and staff awareness around social inequalities and privilege.” In addition to those of Walker, the following goals for the campaign were listed by the college:
- “To increase knowledge and improve beliefs about privilege.
- To heighten awareness of privilege among the USF community.
- To encourage the use of privilege to advocate for others.”
The website also has a series of “privilege posters” for students to use as examples for their work on the campaign. Among these posters are a “White Male” and a “Cisgender” privilege poster. (See images below):
Walker is also involved in the I AM Research Lab, which studies the following:
“The I AM Research Lab examines the intersections of racial, religious, sexual, and gender identities for 2SLGBTQI+ youth and emerging adults (18-29 years old).”
