Anthony Meyer
Anthony Meyer is the Headmaster at Brookline High School, Massachusetts. He previously taught English at Brookline High and has served as dean.
Riots and Violence
In the audio obtained from a confidential source, Headmaster Meyer can be heard in a school-wide address stating that the Capitol riots on January 6th deserve addressing, where he eventually asserts that the police reaction to the “insurrection” demonstrated the police department’s racism.
Headmaster Meyer begins by telling students that Congress met the previous day in order to certify Biden’s electoral victory. This process was then interrupted, as Headmaster Meyer describes in the audio, by “white supremacists and right-wing groups.”
The audio continues via Zoom with Headmaster Meyer lamenting the “damage” that is done to our Republic, as the damage is “real and not easily remedied.” He continues that he and many others are experiencing a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, confusion. Headmaster Meyer emphasizes the events at the Capitol are not seen as normal.
Headmaster Meyer then pivots to blame the violence on President Trump, whom he accuses of directly “fomenting insurrection.” He states that the president “transformed” members of the crowd into “violent insurrectionists.”
Headmaster Meyer attributes the violence at the capitol as a direct result of President Trump and his “use of lies.” Headmaster Meyer states that this raises serious questions about the direction of the country and how dangerous is the political divide.
Headmaster Meyer then continues by observing the failure of police to stop this “mob of overwhelmingly white people.” Headmaster Meyer is also heard juxtaposing this response with what he considers the “brutal” treatment of police toward the Black Lives Matter protests during the summer of 2020. This, Headmaster Meyer states, is proof of the existence of police brutality against minorities.
Headmaster Meyer promises that his staff will be available to speak with students traumatized by the Capitol riots. Administrators will also host special meetings just for “students of color.” Meyer states that “people of color” should have particular access to care and support after the events at the Capitol. Before ending the announcement, Meyer then urges his students to “stand firm” in the face of tyranny and “fight back” against bullies and despotism.
The Professor Watchlist team reached out to Meyer for comment, but have not received a response by the time of publication.
